Duke Energy and Santee Cooper Collaboration will Fuel Virgil C. Summer’s Planned Nuclear Power Projects

Summary

Duke Energy intends to replace its own ageing power plants by 2050 and move its focus on to clean energy resources. This signifies company’s intention to reduce fossil fuel-based electricity generation and look for alternative sources of energy such as nuclear. Duke Energy operates seven nuclear power reactors of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type with a total net capacity of 6,996 megawatts (MW). Two new nuclear power reactors are planned at the Virgil C. Summer plant in South Carolina and they will become operational before 2020. Santee Cooper and South Carolina Electric and Gas are currently the owner and operator for Virgil C. Summer Unit 1 with a capacity of 966 MW. Santee Cooper, an electric and water utility company in South Carolina is planning to sell a portion of its stake in Virgil C. Summer’s planned nuclear power projects. Huge initial investments, no immediate return on investments and the diversifying risk factor involved; are some of the possible constraints which provide an explanation for Santee Cooper’s decision to sell a portion of its stake in Virgil C. Summer’s two planned nuclear reactors. Key drivers, such as a reduction in the company’s overall carbon foot print, to provide safer and reliable power to its customers and diversify energy supply, will entail Duke Energy to invest in Virgil C. Summer’s planned nuclear power projects.
