The Future of Post Human Acoustics: A Preface to a New Theory of Sound and Silence

Description:
Is sound really so pleasant in its nature that it can flatter oneself to the point that, as Exnophon once said, "there is no sound more pleasing than one's own praises"? (BT 2010)

This positive idea of sound can be compared with a similarly flattering view of its opposite (that is, silence), in that, as Thomas Carlyle once wrote, "Speech is of Time, Silence is of Eternity." (BT 2010a)

Contrary to these equally wonderful views about sound and silence (and other claims as will be discussed in the book), acoustics (in relation to sound and silence) is neither possible nor desirable to the extent that the respective ideologues (on the opposing sides of the fence) would like us to believe.

Needless to say, one should not misleadingly treat this questionability of the conventional wisdom about the nature of sound and silence as a suggestion that acoustics is therefore a worthless field of study, or that some fields of study (related to acoustics) like music, mathematical acoustics, psychoacoustics, architectural acoustics, and so on are to be ignored. Obviously, neither of these extreme views is reasonable either.

Instead, this book provides an alternative (better) way to understand the future of acoustics, especially in the dialectic context of sound and silence-while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favoring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible with each other). In other words, this book offers a new theory (that is, the multilateral theory of acoustics) to go beyond the existing approaches in the literature on acoustics in an original way.

If successful, this seminal project is to fundamentally change the way that we think about acoustics, from the combined perspectives of the mind, nature, society, and culture, with enormous implications for the human future and what the author originally called its "post-human" fate.
