Debit Cards in the Netherlands

The proprietary Dutch PIN brand is to disappear at the end of 2011, with EMV chip-based technology replacing the magnetic strip. The roll-out for the new type of card began in March 2011. According to the Ministry of Finance, 90% of the 260,000 POS card acceptance machines in shops have been replaced. According to Detailhandel Nederland, the new system is much more secure than the PIN system and much harder to skim.
