The manufacture of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles is a significant niche industry and demand for these materials is strong. 50, 400 tons of nanoparticle TiO2 was produced in 2010, representing 0.7% of the overall TiO2 market. By 2015, production is projected to increase to 201,500 tons.
Main end user markets are paints and pigments, plastics, paper, cosmetics, sunscreens, skin care, catalysts, ceramics, printing inks and glass. Some market estimates place nanoparticle titanium dioxide production to be around 2million tons per year. However, this is not an accurate reflection and the current estimate is much lower. The market will only start approaching half of this production capacity post 2015, driven by increased demand in the Asian and developing countries markets. The Chinese market is growing rapidly and photocatalytic TiO2 nanoparticles for self-cleaning and deodorizing effect are in strong demand in the rest of Asia. There is strong government support for nanotechnology in these regions and a large number of multi-nationals and innovative companies developing products and processes based on nanoparticles
