Taiwan has become a significant player in broadband internet access. Through active support from the government, the total broadband penetration has been lifted to over 100% considering both fixed line and mobile. The proportion of the population who are internet users has exceeded 75%. Some 90% of all homes in Taiwan own PCs and more than 68% of homes have fixed-line broadband connections. The market has also moved strongly to broadband and in particular FttX. There are a large number of ISPs (more than 180) in Taiwan, although a handful of big ones continue to dominate the market. This report presents an overview of the broadband market in Taiwan, including an overview of the operators, services provided and WiMAX deployments. Fixed-line broadband forecasts to 2018 are included, as well detailed statistics on broadband subscribers by technology.

Key Developments:

A continuous decline in xDSL subscriptions;
a strong shift to FttX subscriptions which surpassed DSL in 2011;
increased investments of NT$200 billion by Chunghwa Telecom in its broadband network over the next ten years to 2020 to offer home users speeds of 10Gb/s, with business customers benefiting from speeds of up to 100Gb/s;
reduction in broadband tariffs stimulates further demand;
