Abstract The Danish banking system starts a new century in a position of strength. Coupled with a growing economy, the major banks in the sector are making satisfactory returns and playing an important role in redefining the Nordic market. Nonetheless, challenges are ever-present. Consolidation will help to bring down costs, but potential problems with the integration of the banking, mortgage credit, and insurance operations of the new financial conglomerates will need to be addressed. Danish banks' ratings, however, are expected to remain stable. Recent years of economic growth have provided Danish banks with a period of stability and, driven by a strong regulatory regime with prudent provisioning requirements, sectoral nonperforming loan problems have largely been minimized.
