Abstract
The two major U.S.-based automakers, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. (GM), have achieved extremely strong profitability and cash flow levels during the past five years, reflecting both the prolonged, cyclically favorable industry environment in North America and the efficacy of strategies to improve their competitiveness. Chrysler Corp., the third member of what had been called the "Big 3," merged in November 1998 with Daimler-Benz AG to form DaimlerChrysler AG, which is based in Germany.)
