Abstract The financial strength of the Danish banking system is sound. The Kingdom of Denmark enjoys a very open and diversified economy with no apparent systemic risks or structural problems, and stability is also underpinned by the strong saving position of households and relatively bright prospects of Danish corporates. Although strong consolidation has resulted in the banking industry in Denmark having an oligopolistic structure, with two major banks holding more than 70% of loans and deposits, competition is still fierce and margins remain low. Although increasingly owned by banks, mortgage credit institutions still represent more than one-third of the financial system.
