Abstract
European banks delivered strong earnings growth in 2004, taking advantage of dynamic business volumes and a benign credit environment. Although the operating environment is expected to be less favorable in 2005, Standard & Poor's believes that the banks will maintain healthy performances and benefit from the diversity of their earnings streams. Positive rating or outlook changes outweighed negative movements in 2004, a trend that is expected to continue in 2005, reflecting selective instances of "de-risking" strategies and enhanced financial profiles. However, the outlooks on most of the ratings are stable. An additional cause of rating activity in 2005 could be the renewed emphasis on mergers and acquisitions.
