Abstract
The third quarter of 2005 saw a generally strong banking and brokerage sector withstand a triple threat--the Refco Group Ltd. LLC bankruptcy, Hurricane Katrina, and new, tougher bankruptcy laws--with little damage. At money-center banks, trading results and asset quality remained strong, while earnings also got a boost from the absence of special charges that bedeviled some banks earlier in the year. Overall, the home mortgage and consumer lending markets were also healthy. As a result, the third quarter of 2005 marks the first quarter since the end of 2002 that Standard & Poor's Ratings Services has not cut a single bank rating (see Chart 1). Brokerage houses, meanwhile, benefited from strong client trading volume, rising equity market prices, tightening credit...
