As the European banking industry prepares to report its earnings for the first half of 2007, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services expects European banks to continue to show strong earnings, despite some signs of market volatility toward the end of the period. The outlook for the second half of 2007 is more challenging, however. The big question is whether the volatility already seen in the U.S. subprime market, and some signs of a decreased appetite for credit risk and leverage among investors, are leading indicators of higher credit charges for the industry and a possible slowdown in some revenue sources.
