Abstract
Like most other global and Western European banking sectors, the Danish banking sector has been feeling the impact of the global liquidity squeeze in the past few weeks. During the extreme events of the last two weeks of September and the first week of October, interbank lending ground to a halt and all other money markets effectively remained closed for several days, severely impeding access to liquidity for many Danish banks. To safeguard financial stability and in line with similar measures taken in other European countries, the Danish parliament on Oct. 10, 2008, approved the Act on Financial Stability, whereby all deposits and senior unsecured debt with Danish banks will be guaranteed for a two-year period.
