Issuer Ranking: EMEA Metals And Mining Sector, Strongest To Weakest May 09

Almost all metals and mining companies rated by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services and based in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region face persistent pressure on their credit quality. Following significant negative rating activity since October 2008, there is a strong and significantly higher negative bias in the portfolio. Two-thirds of rated issuers in this sector either have negative outlooks or are placed on CreditWatch with negative implications. This compares with only 13% in late September 2008, at the time of our last report card. This negative bias indicates that we expect to see more downgrades in the quarters ahead.
