Abstract The Dutch banking sector is one of the most concentrated and most internationalized in Europe. A string of mergers in the early 1990s brought about extensive consolidation in the Dutch banking industry, leaving three giants-- ABN AMRO Bank N.V. (ABN AMRO), ING Bank N.V. (ING), and Rabobank Nederland (Rabobank)--which dominate the market. Together, the three largest banks account for about two-thirds of banking business in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, despite De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch central bank, having signaled that it believes concentration among the major Dutch banks has gone far enough, further consolidation (between large and smaller banks, banks and insurance companies, or pension funds and financial institutions) is expected.
