Abstract By international standards, Australia's financial system is a well developed, deregulated system, which is highly competitive and contains a broad range of institution types. The Australian economy has remained buoyant in the face of economic adversity in the South Asian region. Leveraging off a lower exchange rate in 1998, Australian exporters were able to successfully switch sales to the U.S. and European markets, offsetting declining demand from several Asian trading partners, including Korea, Indonesia, and Japan. Although forecasts are for continued growth in 1999, Australia's economy remains reliant on continued economic growth and export demand from the U.S. and European economies.
