Abstract Dutch banks have not been left unscathed by the worsening global economy and by the cyclical downturn in their domestic market. However, their sound fundamentals mitigate concerns about their ability to cope with the current economic slowdown. The Dutch banking sector is one of the most concentrated and internationalized in Europe. A string of mergers in the early 1990s brought about extensive consolidation in the Dutch banking industry, leaving three giants-- ABN AMRO Bank N.V. (ABN AMRO; AA-/Stable/A-1+), ING Bank N.V.
