Abstract Spanish financial institutions have coped well with increased competition, and have adapted successfully to a low interest rate environment. Having experienced a long period of consolidation subsequent to the end of the deregulation process of the late 1980s and, more recently, the introduction of the European single currency, the banking system has lost its previously healthy interest margins, but is now better equipped to compete in the single European market for banking services. In 1999, with the creation of two big groups out of the four largest banks in the system, Spanish banks made substantial headway in their consolidation process, thus anticipating similar moves in other European markets in preparation for broader pan-European consolidation.
