What started out as a few clouds gathering six months ago is beginning to take the shape of a tempest in the natural gas industry. Several months ago, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services was concerned about the impact of declining rig counts without a corresponding decline in gas production on natural gas price. Now that drilling counts have rebounded dramatically (mostly horizontal drilling), inventory levels and production levels are high and natural gas prices are declining drastically. Indeed, as of April 1, 2010, the one-year NYMEX average natural gas strip stood at $4.81 per mmBTU and the prompt is at $4.09 per mmBTU.
