Abstract The ratings on the 25 leading European utilities rated by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services remain under pressure: nine have negative outlooks or are on CreditWatch with negative implications. This is a result of several general trends that are mainly related to financial risk. The credit profiles of several major players in the sector have suffered as a result of debt incurred to finance what proved to be very expensive international expansion and as a result of ongoing investment needs to modernize and replace aging electricity generation and network assets.
