Crisis In Japan: Insurers' Strong Capital Should Help Forestall Rating Actions Related To The Japanese Earthquake Mar 11

Abstract It is, of course, impossible to put a price tag on the tragic suffering and fatalities stemming from the March 11 Japanese earthquake and the fires and tsunami that followed. However, property/casualty insurers and reinsurers worldwide have been working to put a price on the losses-particularly the insured losses-related to these events. It will be days or weeks before it's possible to assess the full impact on the affected companies. Already, however, one thing seems clear: The damages from the Great Tohoku earthquake could be among the greatest ever recorded for a natural disaster.
