Contemporary West Asia: Politics and Development

War, conflict and terrorism define the face of contemporary West Asia at popular level. However there are far more other important issues and challenges that are currently troubling the governments of West Asian nations. Anwar Alam is currently Professor and Director, Centre for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has served as a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), and Assistant and Associate Professor at the Centre for West Asian and African Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He has been awarded the ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship (1991), International Visitor Programme (Islamic) Scholarship, USA, (2002), Indo-French Social Scientist Exchange Programme Fellowship (2003) and Alexandor Von Humboldt Post Doctoral Fellowship (2004-2006). He has been Visiting Fellow at Maison des Sciences de l?Homme (MSH), Paris, France (March-April 2005), Centre for Citizenship and Ethnicity, Department of Sociology, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK (May-June 2005) and at International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM), Leiden, Netherlands (July-August 2005). He has authored 3 books, Religion and State: A Comparative Study of Contemporary Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia (1998); India and West Asia in the Era of Globalisation (edited, 2008) and Iran and Post- 9/11 World Order (edited, 2009). Besides, he has contributed several articles in national and international referred journals and chapters in edited books. His areas of research interest include International Politics, Political Theory, Religion and Politics, Political Islam, Globalisation and Muslim Society.
