Abstract
Shares in Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. rallied more than 12% Friday after the tire company reported a first-quarter profit that trounced the Capital IQ consensus. Total sales climbed to a record high $5.4 billion on strength in North America. "Improvement in North American Tire is a critical element to achieving our targets. North American Tire's first quarter performance strengthens my confidence in our future," Goodyear CEO Richard Kramer stated. Goodyear reported a profit of $0.51 per share, while analysts expected $0.11. A year ago, the company earned $0.18 per share.
