Canadian Electric Sector Generates More Investor Interest Nov 99

Abstract As 1999 comes to a close, the electric sector in Canada could look back and reminisce on a year that has brought more change than the entire decade. The whole sector, however, will be too busy looking forward to 2000, which will bring with it even more whirlwind change and new developments. The once staid world of the Canadian electric sector, characterized primarily by provincial ownership, and by monopolies covered by traditional 'cost-plus' or rate-of-return regulation, is moving toward the new challenges of convergence, competition, and technological innovation. The largest overt change in 1999 was the restructuring of Ontario Hydro by its owner, the Province of Ontario. The former Goliath of the Canadian industry has been split into five companies....
