Abstract
From Standard & Poor's perspective, there has been a definite improvement in the industry risk of the Italian banking system in the past decade. The improvement is the result of a process of restructuring underway since the early 1990s, when the forces of privatization and deregulation were initially unleashed. Standard & Poor's believes that the Italian banking industry no longer presents higher risks than its major European competitors. There is a strong trend toward consolidation in what has formerly been quite a fragmented system.
