Abstract
The new rating assigned to the Region of Liguria in 2003 brought to 10 the number of Italian regions rated by Standard & Poor's. Overall creditworthiness is satisfactory, with ratings ranging from 'AA' to 'A'. The rated regions are all located in wealthy northern and central Italy, however. Standard & Poor's would expect the credit landscape of Italian regions to be more diversified if it were to include regions in the south of the country. The bulk of the Italian regions' budgets is represented by health care spending, their main responsibility.
