Abstract
The credit quality of U.S.-based building materials companies has been and is expected to remain fairly stable for the foreseeable future. The primary driver is the bright prospect for residential construction and remodeling, at least for the remainder of 2005. Although there are a number of negative trends that point to a slowdown thereafter, and some geographic markets may fare worse than others, the overall decline is not expected to be dramatic. Underpinning this belief are fairly favorable long-term economic and demographic factors and the aging of the existing housing base, which continues to increase in size.
