Abstract
The most significant development in recent months for European (re)insurers has been an indication that U.S. reserving issues may not be as problematical as once feared, at least for some players. Three of Europe's largest (re)insurers appear to have found cost-effective means of taking this risk off their balance sheets. Meanwhile, the absence of significant U.S. storm activity so far this year is good news for (re)insurers, but leaves questions raised after the 2005 hurricanes unanswered. Underwriting conditions continue to be favorable in the non-life sector, although the U.K. market is facing challenges.
