Abstract
Operating results and credit quality within the U.S. building materials sector have taken a hit over the past several months because of reduced volumes. Those declines reflect a still-weak U.S. economy that has resulted in continued depressed level of housing, a sharp drop in commercial construction activity, and limited consumer spending on repairs and remodeling. Nearly all of the 35 U.S. building materials companies that Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' rates recorded double-digit declines in sales for the first quarter. Revenues for the group dropped an average of 20%, exceeding our prior expectations.
