Microgrids to Enable Greater Flexibility and Optimization of Power Delivery Sources

Summary

The present electric power supply and delivery systems consist of a complex grid of multiple electrical components including power generation supply, transmission, voltage control, and power delivery with multiple points of supply and use. The integration of this complex grid with power supply and delivery sources is referred to as distribution system. The distribution system of the future, unlike the presently used conventional distribution model, will take full advantage of the services that can be provided by a microgrid. This distribution system of the future will be locally controlled and will allow a quick response time for the functions related to it. The other functions of transmission grid management and longer response time functions will continue to be provided by the central control authority. However, the microgrids would be controlled by local controllers and will operate in order to keep the distribution voltage and frequency within limits as specified by the central control authority. The operations of microgrids would primarily be in response to the indigenous energy requirement with cogeneration of power and heat, power quality and reliability and will be managed in response to the market signals, such as price of electricity, gas and so on. While changing the way the current distributed systems operate, microgrids will enable greater flexibility and optimization of power delivery sources in the future.
