This survey provides information on major trends in the Russian coal industry. The report provides information on reserves, production, ranking of key coal producers, regional production, transportation issues, restructuring in the sector, export performance, company holding structures and major projects.

In addition the report covers the recent performance of seven top holdings and companies: SUEK, Kuzbassrazrezugol, Mechel (Yuzhny Kuzbass, Yakutugol), Evraz Holding (Raspadskaya, Yuzhkuzbassugol), Sibuglemet Severstal (Vorkutaugol), Russian Coal, SDS-Coal, Kuzbass Fuel Company, Belon. The survey also includes an insight into the financial position and debt burden of Russia’s coal industry.

Russia's Coal Consumption

Russian consumption of coal hit a record in 2008, amounting to 203.4 million tons. In 2009, it fell to the lowest level in the last five years, down by 10.8% against 2008. Power utilities consume most of coal produced locally and imported from neighbouring countries. Power and heat generation accounted for 48.6% of total Russian consumption last year. In 2009, Russia’s power utilities consumed about 88.1 million tonnes of coal, mainly low quality bituminous coal and lignite. Coal accounts for 26% of Russian electricity generation by thermal power plants. The share is much lower in comparison with the world average. The difference is explained by the availability of natural gas delivered at regulated prices. Production of coke accounted for 20.9% of Russian coal consumption in 2009.
