World Femtocell and Picocell Market
Frost & Sullivan, March 2011, Pages: 89
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Femtocell and Picocell Market provides revenue and unit forecast, forecast by technology and verticals, and SWOT analysis of key vendors. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following geographic markets: North America (NA), Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia Pacific (APAC), and Caribbean and Latin America (CALA).
Frost & Sullivan believes that the continued deployments in 2010 have established that the Femtocell market is real and that it is driven by some sound drivers. That said, the business case regarding Femtocell while not expected to remain a significant challenge through the forecast period, is expected to introduce some delay as some of the early adopters continue to deploy Femtocells. Frost & Sullivan expects to see early 4th generation LTE Femtocell prototypes in 2011 with deployments forecasted to begin mid-to-late 2012. Dual-mode, 3G and LTE, prototypes are expected to be demonstrated in 2012 with deployments expected in 2013 time-frame.
Market Overview:
$0.28 Billion World Femtocell and Picocell Market to Skyrocket to $7.72 Billion by 2016 on the Back of Long-term Evolution
Femtocell- and Picocell-based solutions are expected to form the core of long-term evolution (LTE) deployment strategies from both a capacity and coverage perspectives. This enhanced profile of Femtocell and Picocell is extremely significant, as it has spawned the concept of small cell for integrated Femtocell/Picocell and Macrocell solutions. The time-to-market advantages obtained through an integrated solution offer service providers the opportunity to realize quicker returns on infrastructure investments. Additionally, sophisticated Femtozone applications, such as home monitoring, are expected to be critical in enabling service providers to differentiate their solutions and drive revenues. The market will also get a boost from the publishing of request for proposals (RFP) for enterprise deployments, initially in the small office home office (SOHO) or small medium businesses (SMB).
Regional Vendors and Vendors with Integrated Femtocell Products to Gain Traction in the Market
Continuous coverage and capacity issues of LTE deployments can be assuaged to some extent by the adoption of Femtocell and Picocell, as they will enable the delivery of the promised broadband rates and drive adoption of the service. As mobile data usage has exploded in the past two years and building Macrocell cells is expensive, the focus has shifted to leveraging Picocells to deliver those speeds in certain markets. “The competition from integrated Macrocell and Picocell vendors is a challenge to vendors that lack Macrocell solutions,” says the analyst of this research. “Nevertheless, there is immense scope for vendors to differentiate their solution, especially with regards to Femtozone applications and enterprise solutions.”
There is some competition to be expected from integrated solutions. Integrated Femtocell and digital subscriber line (DSL) devices are not likely to be as advanced as stand-alone Femtocell devices currently available, but they meet existing requirements and can evolve to compete more effectively with other stand-alone Femtocell devices. Regional vendors also have their advantages in the intensely competitive market. ZyXel and Askey are key examples of regional vendors that are able to address regional requirements and work closely with the service providers to adapt their solution. “As service provider requirements continue to grow and evolve, especially in the enterprise market, vendors need to respond proactively them,” notes the analyst. “For example, the implementation of self optimized network (SON) is not just about zero-touch implementation but also about end-to-end integration and interfacing with service providers’ back office systems.” Vendors can offer end-to-end solutions and compete on the basis of strong product differentiation, while ecosystem partnerships will enable them to proactively address evolving customer requirements and new revenue opportunities.
