The study investigates the perspective of C-level executives in North America with regards to communications and collaboration tools. Conferencing and messaging tools have high awareness and usage and are used extensively at all levels of the organization. Mobile phones are the most popular communication endpoint. The communications and collaboration market proves to be highly competitive, but consolidated to a large degree. The most popular pattern is usage of up to three providers. All communications and collaboration tools have been evaluated as similarly important. The surveyed tools satisfy or exceed C-level executives' expectations. Half of surveyed companies plan to increase budgets for these tools in the next 12 months

This research service titled 2010 North America Investment Decisions in Communications and Collaboration Products and Services determines the awareness and usage of communications and collaboration tools. The research findings were based on Web-based interviews with 200 C-level executives from North America. The study defines the advantages and disadvantages of the products and services, identifies the key market participants, and determines budgetary plans. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: managed services and hosted services.

C-level Executives Focus on Cost Savings When Making Investment Decisions Regarding Advanced Communications and Collaboration Technologies

About 60 per cent of Companies in North America Allocate Up to 30 per cent of Total Expenditure to Communications and Collaboration Technologies

As organizations in North America become increasingly virtual, they turn to advanced communications and collaboration technologies to cost effectively connect geographically dispersed teams. Cost reduction ranks among the top three benefits of most communications and collaboration tools, except for audio conferencing and social media. Of the twelve communications and collaboration tools surveyed, different C-level executives use four to five different tools, on an average. While usage patterns indicate that majority of the tools are used daily, conferencing tools are used less often (daily to weekly). Organizations typically use approximately five to six tools. Additional analysis shows that practically all users of communications and collaboration tools use at least one tool daily. Such demand has created a competitive but consolidated market, with a small number of providers holding the bulk of C-level executives’ mindshare. Over 50 percent of the respondents identified these providers as the primary suppliers of communications and collaboration services. A high percent of the interviewees uses up to three of these providers.

Companies with revenues over $250 million admit using hosted and managed services much more often, while almost a third of the companies earning under $250 million do not know what types of services they use. “C-level executives are highly aware of and use conferencing and messaging tools, both within the organizations and personally,” observes the analyst of this research service. “Of the twelve communications and collaboration tools surveyed, instant messaging and videoconferencing took the top honors for awareness and usage.”

The overall spending plans of surveyed companies look positive as half of the respondents indicate that they plan to increase their budgets for communications and collaboration tools in the next 12 months. The large companies are more advanced with respect to integration and deployment of communications and collaboration capabilities because they set aside a larger percent of their budgets to information technology (IT) and communications and collaboration. Customers appear ready to spend more on enterprise-grade instant messaging with integrated presence as their budgets open up. “The main reasons for increasing the budget for communications and collaborations in the near future include the need to increase productivity and leverage technology advances, and the overall bright budget forecasts,” observes the analyst. “There is also a clear trend towards tightly integrated multi-vendor solutions.”
