Abstract The structure and performance of the Swiss banking system have improved considerably over the past five years. There is a diversity of activity across domestic retail, private, and investment banking, each of which has distinct risk/reward characteristics. All have contributed positively to Swiss banks' risk profiles and finances; profitability has been rising, and balance sheets strengthening. Nevertheless, each of the key areas harbors challenges and threats, which the banks will need to confront. The two entities that form the 'Large Banks' sector, UBS AG (AA+/Stable/A-1+) and Credit Suisse Group (AA-/Stable/A-1+) and subsidiaries, dominate Swiss banking.
