Abstract The German banking system continues to suffer from both cyclical and, in particular, structural problems, which had only been masked by more favorable market conditions until early 2000. German banks' business and risk profiles have weakened steadily in recent years as a result of: Fierce competition in a highly fragmented market; Unfavorably high levels of operating expenses; Growing investment needs in their IT systems; Comparatively high provisioning needs for corporate and real estate lending; Low domestic lending margins; and Growing customer demands and sophistication.
