Bucking the Trend--Strengthening Bank Creditworthiness in Central and Eastern Europe Oct 02

Abstract Over the past 12 months, the credit ratings on Central and Eastern European banks--including those in the Russian Federation (BB-/Stable/B), Ukraine (B/Stable/B), and the Republic of Kazakhstan (foreign currency, BB/Positive/B; local currency, BB+/Positive/B)--have been on an improving trend, compared with many other emerging and more mature markets globally. The recent trend in bank rating upgrades in the region is in stark contrast to the dire situation of the 1990s, when many of the region's banking systems were brought to the brink of collapse by extremely difficult economic and industry-related problems, which led to a wave of downgrades and defaults.
