Abstract
The ratings on Royal Bank of Canada reflect its very strong domestic market position in a full range of banking businesses. The bank commands a 21% share of the banking business in Canada. Royal Bank is the largest Canadian bank when measured by assets of C$398.0 billion, with dominant retail and wholesale operations and an important wealth management platform. These strengths have given the bank a competitive advantage for the past several years, which has translated into a consistent earnings growth trend. Moreover, despite the difficult credit and operating environment in the past two years, Royal Bank has been better able to manage the impact on earnings growth as a result of lower exposure to problematic sectors than its peers....
