Coal bed methane (CBM) is a fossil fuel that is very similar to natural gas. CBM is understood to be the gas present in an area of a coal deposit that has not yet been affected by mining operations. It often comprises more than 90 per cent methane. It is, however, seldom stored as a free gas in pores but instead is bound sorptively to the inner surfaces of the coal. Therefore, coal is both the source and reservoir rock for CBM. Though commercial production of methane in India has started few years ago, still sizable amount of this gas is left unexploited. Hence, we have centred our insights on the first category of CBM i.e. VCBM and hereafter, VCBM and CBM terms are interchangeable and are limited to this report. Also, the report has been prepared for the status analysis of all the CBM blocks awarded and its potential in India.
