Acute pulmonary thromboembolism is an important cause of in-hospital mortality. Despite recommendations, multiple studies demonstrate underutilization of adequate prophylaxis. The diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolism is often difficult due to the unspecific presentation, and treatment must be individualised appropriately for each patient on the basis of clinical risk.
