The ADP survey of private payrolls showed a gain of 179,000 jobs in April. This was weaker than the 195,000 consensus expectation, but it followed a small upwardly revised 207,000 reading in March (previously up 201,000). The goods-producing sector added 41,000 jobs, making that month the sixth straight month of gains. Manufacturing added 25,000 jobs--now up for seven straight months--and construction gained 9,000. Services added the bulk of the jobs, with a gain of 138,000 new jobs in April--the 16th straight monthly gain. The soft reading increases the markets' worries that Friday's government jobs report will also disappoint....
