Intergovernmental Agreement - Belarus and Russia to Benefit from the Nuclear Power Pact

Summary

In Europe, Belarus is one of the key emerging nuclear power countries, along with Poland, Turkey, Albania and Estonia. Belarus is mostly dependent on gas for electricity generation and it largely relies on gas imports. To support diversification of energy generation resources and to reduce fossil fuel imports, the country is opting for nuclear energy. Russia intends to assist emerging nuclear power countries such as Indonesia, Jordan and Belarus for constructing nuclear power reactors. It has recently signed an agreement with Belarus to build two nuclear power reactors with a capacity of 2,400 MW, which is expected to provide 30% of power supply in the country. For Russia, its intergovernmental agreements will strengthen its position as a major nuclear technology and service provider in the long term. Despite Japan’s nuclear crisis, Belarus and Russia have boldly taken the initial step in signing an agreement emphasizing the importance and essential need for nuclear energy for power generation.
