Getinge’s principal activities are the manufacture and supply of medical equipment used in operating rooms, intensive-care units, care units, sterilisation centres, elderly care and by companies and institutions that are active in the Life Science area. The company has grown significantly over the past 15 years through the development of its existing business and a string of strategic acquisitions, including: Arjo in 1995, MDT Castle (1996), Parker Bath and Maquet (2000), ALM (2001), Heraaus (2002), Jostra and Siemens LSS (2003), BHM (2004), La Calhene (2005), Huntleigh Technology (2007), Boston Scientific’s Cardiac and Vascular Surgery divisions (2008) and Datascope (2009).
The group is organised into three business areas: Medical Systems, Extended Care and Infection Control.
- Medical Systems supplies equipment and instruments for a variety of surgical disciplines, cardiology and intensive care. The product range includes operating-room equipment, instruments for cardiovascular surgery, anaesthesia equipment and ventilators. These products are marketed under the Maquet brand. Production is conducted at nine plants in six countries.
Two significant acquisitions represented a key step in Getinge’s aim of establishing a leading business in the market for cardiovascular surgery. At the beginning of 2008, the company acquired Boston Scientific’s Cardiac and Vascular Surgery divisions, which reinforced the its position in terms of both product offering and sales channels, and the acquisition of US-based Datascope in January 2009 expanded its product range to also include cardiac assist products.
- Extended Care supplies products and services for the hospital and elderly care markets. The portfolio includes solutions for preventing the risk of pressure ulcers and deep vein thrombosis, as well as a range of ergonomically-designed products to solve daily work in lifting, transferring and personal hygiene. The products are marketed under the ArjoHuntleigh brand. Production is conducted at seven plants in seven countries.
- Infection Control supplies systems to prevent the onset and spread of infection. The product range comprises disinfectors, sterilisers, documentation systems and related equipment, as well as service and consulting. The products are marketed under the Getinge and Lancer brands. Production is conducted at 10 plants in six countries.
As of December 2010, the Getinge group had around 12,200 employees in 37 countries. In 2010, the company generated a net profit of SEK2.3 billion on sales of SEK22.2 billion.
Getinge’s shares have been listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange since 1993. Carl Bennet AB, a company controlled by Carl Bennet, Getinge's Chairman of the Board, is the company’s largest shareholder, with 18.1% of the capital and 48.9% of the voting shares as of 31st December 2010.
