Cambodia's fashion bags industry is supported by a number of factors that help it remain viable despite its low level of development.
Most important of these strengths is the existence of nongovernmental organizations that provide employment opportunities to many of the country's disadvantaged citizens. These institutions have set up social enterprises instrumental in the manufacture of fashion bags and other types of handcrafted products.
The bulk of output is sent to overseas markets even though the country has weak systems for shipping and exportation. It is estimated that at least $3 million worth of silk handicrafts, under which fashion bags are classified, are sent to foreign destinations every year. North America, the Asia-Pacific region and the EU are the leading markets.

Key Findings
1. Most suppliers featured in this report plan to raise quotes over the next six months. Price adjustments will be kept low as many makers will implement them within 5 percent of current levels. The rising cost of raw materials, especially silk, is seen as the main impetus for the movement in quotes.
2. North America, Asia-Pacific and the EU will remain to be the top markets in the next 12 months. The first two are expected to take a larger share of exports compared with current figures. Among countries in these regions, the US, Australia and France are predicted to account for the bulk of growth in revenue.
3. Cambodia's status as one of the world's least developed countries has helped its exports to gain favored status in key markets such as the EU and ASEAN. Products from the country are generally not covered by tariffs and quotas.
4. Models in traditional designs will be the emphasis over the next 12 months. These styles, which are popular among expatriates and foreign tourists, feature aesthetic elements that come from artisans and ethnic groups.
5. Because of the high cost involved, hiring dedicated product stylists will remain to be a difficult undertaking for most suppliers. As a result, many makers will continue to find it hard to release new models on a regular basis.
6. Handbags, wallets and purses are the leading product segments among featured makers.
