Abstract
HONG KONG (Standard & Poor's CreditWire) March 24, 1999--The credit quality of electric power utilities in Asia faces the possibility of further deterioration in the wake of the economic slowdown in Asia, Standard & Poor's said today in its newly launched Asia-Pacific Electric Power Survey. Declining growth in electricity demand, insufficient tariff increases, and ambitious capacity expansions could lead to further deterioration of credit quality, the report says. However, Suzanne Smith, Director of Standard & Poor's Infrastructure Ratings in Hong Kong, says in the report that planned privatization and asset sales could be an effective way to reduce the debt burden of government-owned utilities like KEPCO in Korea, EGAT in Thailand, NAPOCOR in the Philippines, and Tenaga in Malaysia.
