Abstract The counterparty credit ratings on Bank of Baroda (BoB) reflect the bank's sound business profile as one of the largest and better-performing state-owned banks in India. The bank's credit profile, however, is moderated by its weak asset-quality position, which undermines stated capital ratios. The weak operating environment in India, together with a legal framework that hampers the resolution of nonperforming assets (NPAs), ensure that asset quality will remain a challenge for the bank into the medium term. Accordingly, management of the financial fallout from asset-quality problems remains the key factor in the bank's future profitability and will influence the extent to which additional external capital will be required to support operations.
