Abstract The Federative Republic of Brazil suffers from chronic underutilization of its banking system. The country has some of the most resilient banks in the region, very profitable and highly automated. In addition, the Brazilian financial system benefits from some important features of the Brazilian economy, namely its size, diversity, and growth potential. Nevertheless, the volatile operating environment continues to pose significant challenges, and a large portion of profits derives, not from banking activities, but from holdings of government securities.
