An Updated View Of Extraordinary Government Support For U.S. Financial Institutions Feb 10

Abstract Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes that the U.S. financial services industry is undergoing a structural transformation that could include significant changes with long-term repercussions (see 'Recent Rating Actions Reflect Industry Risk For U.S. Financial Institutions,' published June 17, 2009, on RatingsDirect). During this transition period, we have incorporated potential extraordinary government support to systemically important financial institutions into our analyses. Accordingly, for U.S. financial institutions that, in our opinion, may be viewed as highly systemically important, our issuer credit ratings (ICRs) may be one or more notches above the institutions' stand-alone credit profiles (SACP) (see 'Twelve Major U.S. And European Financial Institutions Have Ratings Lowered, Outlooks Revised,' published Dec. 19, 2008, on RatingsDirect).
