Argentine, Brazilian Banks Ready to Tap New Domestic Markets

Abstract A cautious optimism regarding the banking systems in Argentina and Brazil has returned as abating economic uncertainty and industry consolidation in those countries have enticed the banks to extend business into undertapped market segments, analysts from Standard & Poor's told investors in New York recently. 'The environment has been improving for Argentine banks and they are starting to take advantage of it,' said Gabriel Caracciolo, an analyst from Standard & Poor's Buenos Aires office. Argentine banks are coming out of their protective shells and looking for ways to stay competitive going forward, he said.
