Abstract
The economic story from Latin America was mixed at the end of 2000 and continues that way into 2001. The sovereign ratings of Mexico and Brazil had been upgraded, yet Argentina, Peru, and Colombia had been downgraded. Because the corporate and infrastructure sectors are dependent on the macroeconomic atmosphere, the outlook for these sectors is also varied. "The sovereign picture in Latin America is very mixed between the countries that have been faithfully following an aggressive reform program, which has been reflected in their improved outlooks or ratings, and those that have not been willing or able to implement needed reforms," said Laura Feinland Katz, managing director.
