Abstract
Canada fell into recession in the final months of 2008, and things have only gotten worse in 2009. Due to the recession's global nature, Canadian companies involved in international trade have been hit as badly as more domestically focused firms hurt by falling consumer spending. Canadian consumers have geared down their discretionary spending in favor of restoring their savings. With household purchases accounting for almost two-thirds of all spending in the economy, this new emphasis on thrift is weighing heavily on GDP growth. Consumer spending has fallen about C$10 billion since September 2008. As a result, the personal savings rate is back at 4.7%, up from a low of 1.9% before the start of the recession.
