Abstract
The ratings on the major banks of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are expected to remain stable through 2007, supported by continuing benign economic conditions and robust and stable financial performances. In some cases, improved earnings capacity and sustainability could translate into positive rating actions. Although Standard & Poor's Ratings Services considers the region's banks well placed to manage most downturn scenarios, harder-than-expected landings in Iceland or the Baltic economies could put pressure on ratings on financial institutions with exposure to these markets. Nevertheless, we think it much more likely that any downgrade of a major Nordic bank would be driven by bank-specific actions rather than systemic developments.
